Issue #4 of The Kove follows Katie's photography as the San Diego comedy scene deals with a pandemic, an essay on Ben Franklin and pirates, and a summer playlist to listen to as you peruse the pages.

Music | Big Wild - Superdream

I’ve been trying to curate the perfect playlist to start 2021 and honestly, I was hooked on one song, “6’s to 9’s (feat. Rationale)” by Big Wild. Like, it was the only song that mattered whether it was on the playlist or not because it was the playlist.

I had to know where this song came from. Big Wild’s album, Superdream, is dreamy. It’s the color turquoise. It’s airy. It’s like a slice of velvet, disco cake. It’s a modern, disco celebration. It’s the moment.

I had found Big Wild sometime around 2015 or 2016 when they collaborated with Toke Styrke, a Swedish singer that I had just found through the power of YouTube. Looking back at Big Wild’s library, their catalog is full of familiar songs that you can finally put a name on. And I’m so glad I stumbled on them again. I came across “6’s to 9’s” and it stood so far out in front of the rest of the songs I had been listening to that I had to go to the album.

Going to the album might be one of the highest compliments modern music can get. In a time where we consume radio stations that we barely pay attention to or tune in to our carefully curated playlists, we either know a song, or we don’t. We don’t speak in albums anymore. I try to listen to full albums but it just doesn’t happen that often. The last few times I listened fully through was for artists that I have been following for at least a decade. They released new albums and I try to be a decent fan and listen to what they made but even then, I don’t always make it to the end.

It isn’t that often a song stands out so much that I become curious about where it came from. Usually, I would rather create these mini soundtracks to the moment, a hodge-podge of songs from various artists because, for some reason, that always feels like it fits the moment better than one artist’s voice. Something you can handcraft. And then sometimes it’s better to let the artists do their jobs.

And right now, it’s this one. This is the album to start off 2021. It can stand alone or be added to existing playlists of yours, but I recommend the full thing, as intended.
