Issue #4 of The Kove follows Katie's photography as the San Diego comedy scene deals with a pandemic, an essay on Ben Franklin and pirates, and a summer playlist to listen to as you peruse the pages.

What to Watch This Weekend | Mike Birbiglia - Thank God for Jokes

Thank God for Jokes is one of my favorite specials. Not only is Mike a great writer and performer, he’s able to be a clean comic without being annoying so he gets major bonus points.

Does he scream, “FUCK!” when talking about the muppets? Yes. But he’s still a clean comic.

Thank God for Jokes is about the essence of comedy, which is making fun of people and things and situations. He winds through story after story, sort of like Inception where he interrupts one story for a tangent on another and sometimes another, only to make his way back to his original point, all without you noticing he went on another joke inception.

This special will always make me laugh and is as well-rounded as any special gets. There’s crowd work, there’s stories about childhood and possible career-ending mishaps, and there’s a clear love of comedy and joke-writing.

So this weekend, if you’re looking for something to watch, it’s Thank God for Jokes by Mike Birbiglia on Netflix.
