Issue #4 of The Kove follows Katie's photography as the San Diego comedy scene deals with a pandemic, an essay on Ben Franklin and pirates, and a summer playlist to listen to as you peruse the pages.

Heat Wave

is the playlist for those hot August days where you can’t stop smiling.

Inspired by my recent trip to Coney Island, this playlist embodies the summer of 2021. A place where we were able to venture out into the sunshine once again.

Is it really hot out? Yes. Are we in the clear? No. Do we just need a minute? Absolutely.

I visited my family in NY for the first time since before the pandemic and while staying with my sister in Queens, I made my way down to Coney Island with my brother-in-law, my niece, and her friend.

There isn’t a time where I’ve seen my brother-in-law have more fun than when we were in the bumper cars, driving right into young children and laughing about it. I’m not going to lie, I hate games but I realized I enjoyed bumper cars.

While my niece and her friend were riding more rides, my brother-in-law and I went to get a beer on the boardwalk. It was bright and hot. A cold beer was the only thing to do at that point.

We sat in silence, drinking, people-watching, being, and Frank Sinatra’s Summer Wind played. We sat there for an hour listening to oldies, barely talking, and as the world started to spin again, it was nice to stop and look around.

In the words of our friend, Ferris, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Here’s a cold beer and a solid soundtrack to the hottest days ahead of us as the world starts spinning again.
