Issue #4 of The Kove follows Katie's photography as the San Diego comedy scene deals with a pandemic, an essay on Ben Franklin and pirates, and a summer playlist to listen to as you peruse the pages.

The Summer Edit is your adventure back into the sunlight.

It’s the perfect soundtrack for thinking about how to reenter society with sunshine on your face. Your whole face.

I love this playlist. It’s light and breezy but warm and happy. It reminds me of laughing outside but doesn’t jump the shark. It’s the credit sequence to a good movie.

It also gives me something to post while I rewrite yet another version of the same essay that’s been sitting in an open tab on my computer for weeks now.

But I’ve tested it and this playlist is ready for consumption. Put some headphones on and go for a walk outside. Just be outside until the playlist is over. Go to the park and just sit. Look around but don’t be a creep about it.

In 2020, I got a dream job that I still can’t believe is real. Leading up to that, during the events of 2020, I thought everything I had worked for was derailed. To avoid a breakdown, I couldn’t spend too much time thinking about everything that I’d never finish (and this time it wouldn’t be the fault of my Aries energy or undiagnosed ADHD). Instead, I just kept myself busy doing things that made me happy and fulfilled and I ended up getting something amazing out of it. It was a weird combo of appreciation from my hard work and unexpected because… well, 2020.

So who knows what the future holds. This summer will probably be wild. There’s a lot of pent up energy that is waiting to be released and it’s going to be a lot. So this playlist isn’t a lot. It’s for the moments of the summer that will connect the past to the future. It will be for the present.

Here’s to now and not to yesterday or tomorrow.

Just, now.
