Issue #4 of The Kove follows Katie's photography as the San Diego comedy scene deals with a pandemic, an essay on Ben Franklin and pirates, and a summer playlist to listen to as you peruse the pages.

What to Watch This Weekend | Jo Koy - Comin' in Hot

You might recognize Jo Koy from Chelsea Lately, @Midnight with Chris Hardwick, or the late show circuit.

He hasn’t appeared in movies and doesn’t often appear in sitcoms because he’s through and through a stand-up comic.

Something comics talk about is “Why are you actually here?” or “Are you a real comic or are you using this to get somewhere else”… in less eloquent terms.

Basically feeling out a new comic to see if they're an actual comic who will be around for a while and respect the craft... or a passerby.

A lot of people start doing comedy because they want to get something out of it.

  • They think it’ll help their acting "career"

  • They want to work on their writing

  • They don’t have money for a therapist

  • Etc.

Some comics want to end up on SNL or want to write their own shows and movies that can expand their stand-up.

But there are pure stand-up comics who aren’t interested in anything else, even with a paycheck attached.

Jo Koy is a pure stand-up comic who started his career in 1994 in Las Vegas. His comedy focuses a lot on his family and his experiences being a first-generation Asian American, a single father, and deep down (even though he doesn’t admit it on stage) a mama’s boy.

He loves his mom and loves his son. He talks about them in every special and emphasizes the difference in his upbringing, his mom’s upbringing, and his son’s.

Comin’ in Hot was filmed in a huge arena in Hawaii and Jo can handle himself in an arena, which is no small feat. In this special, he explains the difference in Asian accents, the privileged life his son leads, and growing up with a Filipino mom in the ’70s and ’80s.

So if you're wondering what to watch this weekend... it's Comin' in Hot by Jo Koy. Available on Netflix
